Peter Adolph Winkopp (born January 25, 1759 in Erfurt , † October 26, 1813 in Aschaffenburg ) was a German writer and publicist .

Life

Peter Adolph Winkopp was a member of the Benedictine order and fled from the Petersberg monastery in Erfurt. He now devoted himself to writing and initially wrote several novels that were set in monasteries. He became known as the publisher of the magazine Der deutsche Klassen (published from 1785 to 1789 in Zurich), which was devoted to political and religious topics. Because of his criticism of Kurmainz , Winkopp was picked up on March 8, 1786 in Basel , brought to Mainz and held there until the end of September. After his release he stayed in Mainz and married the widow of a Frankfurt bookseller. He founded his own bookstore, which he had to give up because of the poor business development. Winkopp came to terms with the Electoral Mainz government, which appointed him Court Chamber Assessor in 1791 and Court Chamber Councilor in Erfurt in 1796. He dedicated himself as an author and editor to contemporary history topics and worked for the magazine Der Rheinische Bund from 1806 until his death .
