Life

Peter Boeckel came from a family of artists in Antwerp and was a son of the painter Cornelius Boeckel. The Lutheran family is said to have left Antwerp for religious reasons and settled in Hamburg . In 1559 he created a monumental map of Dithmarschen as a woodcut from nine printing blocks measuring 108 cm × 74 cm, the original of which has only been preserved in one copy in the Austrian National Library .

From 1561 until shortly before his death he was in the service of the Mecklenburg dukes. In 1561 he was court painter in Schwerin with Duke Johann Albrecht I and after his death in 1576 with his brother Duke Ulrich III. Most recently he worked as a private painter in Wismar, where he had bought a house on Krämerstrasse in 1567 and built a windmill in 1580. From 1584 he was head of the Marienkirche in Wismar .

His son Martin Boeckel († 1641) became a surveyor and office secretary at the court in Schwerin, his grandson Martin von Böckel was a lawyer and diplomat, including syndicus in Lübeck and chancellor in Wolfenbüttel .
