Peter Borowsky

Peter Borowsky (born June 3, 1938 in Angerburg ; † October 13, 2000 in Hamburg ) was a German historian and professor of modern history with a focus on contemporary history at the University of Hamburg .

Life

Borowsky attended various schools during the Second World War and in the post-war period and graduated from high school in 1959 in Bethel , Bielefeld. He then studied history and Latin as well as education, psychology and philosophy in Marburg , Freiburg and at the University of Hamburg from 1959 to 1965 .

After the teaching qualification for grammar schools, Borowsky became a research assistant to Fritz Fischer in 1966 , with whom he received his doctorate in 1968 on German Ukraine policy in 1918. In 1970 he was appointed to the Scientific Council, the following year to the Scientific Councilor, he continued to teach modern and contemporary history at the Department of History in Hamburg , since 1974 also regularly as a visiting professor at Smith College in Northampton , Massachusetts , and since 1991 at Middlebury College in the US state Vermont .

Borowsky completed his habilitation in Modern History in 1991, with a special focus on contemporary history, in Hamburg, where he then worked as a private lecturer . He was appointed professor in 1996, but without receiving a chair.

Borowsky wrote numerous articles on Eastern European, German and Hamburg history of the 19th and 20th centuries. His introduction to history , first published in 1975 together with Heide Wunder and Barbara Vogel , is still significant today. He wrote a biography of Hitler for young people .
