Peter Boy
Peter Boy (* approx. 1650 in Lübeck ; † March 20, 1727 in Düsseldorf ) was a German goldsmith and painter.
Life
The exact date of birth of Peter Boy cannot be exactly determined in Lübeck because of the more common name; the year of birth is usually given in the literature as 1648 or 1651. His education is also unknown, but Clasen takes on an education in a European stronghold of baroque goldsmithing. In 1675 he acquired the citizenship of the city of Frankfurt am Main and in 1677 became the "Master in Gold". He bought a semi-detached house on the Zeil , which he lived in for 27 years. He worked as a goldsmith and as a miniature painter in enamel, but also created large portraits in oil. His main work, described by Heinrich Sebastian Hüsgen , was a golden pomp monstrance with 737 precious stones and a weight of approx. Seven kilograms. In the form of a tree, it showed Abraham as the trunk of the tree, which was adorned with enamel miniatures, which showed the family tree of Jesus from Isaac to Jacob according to Matthew 1, 1–17, for the Trier Elector and Archbishop Johann Hugo von Orsbeck (formerly im Trier Cathedral , destroyed in 1804 as part of the Trier Cathedral Treasury in the course of secularization , only the miniatures are in the possession of the Grand Dukes of Luxembourg ). Other large and well-known clients were the Mainz Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn , Count Friedrich Adolf zur Lippe in Detmold and the Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz-Neuburg in Düsseldorf. Boy ordered the latter to be his gallery inspector and cabinet painter in 1712, so that Boy moved to Düsseldorf, where he stayed even after the court was moved to Mannheim and spent his old age. He was buried in the Lutheran Berger Church in Düsseldorf. Elector Karl III set him the marble tomb . Philip of the Palatinate .
Peter Boy was married three times. From the first marriage comes the Frankfurt goldsmith Peter Boy the Younger (1681–1742), from whom the other members of the Frankfurt artist family descend, and from the second marriage the royal court painter in Hanover Gottfried Boy (1701–1755).
