Peter Caesar (born November 30, 1939 in Oldenburg , † December 30, 1999 in Idar-Oberstein ) was a German politician ( FDP ).

education and profession

Peter Caesar was married and had two sons. He attended elementary school in Oldenburg and grammar schools in Oldenburg, Bonn and Kelkheim, where he passed his Abitur in 1960. After completing his military service , he studied law at the Free University in Berlin and at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn from 1962 to 1966 . In 1966 he passed the first state examination and did his legal clerkship in the district of the Higher Regional Court of Koblenz . After passing the second state examination in law, he was a lawyer in Idar-Oberstein from 1969 to 1987 .

politics

Since 1970 he was a member of the FDP Rhineland-Palatinate . From 1983 he was a member of the state executive committee of the FDP. In 1990 he also became a member of the federal executive committee of the FDP . From 1974 to 1999 he was a member of the district council of the Birkenfeld district . In 1991 he was elected to the state parliament for the first time, but resigned his mandate shortly after the beginning of the legislative period. From 1996 he was again a member of the state parliament until his death. In 1999 he was a member of the 11th Federal Assembly . In June 1987 he was appointed Minister-President Bernhard Vogel as Minister of Justice in his cabinet. He held this office until September 1999 (at the time as the longest serving minister in the state) and was also Deputy Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate from November 1998 under Kurt Beck .

Due to his illness from ALS , Caesar announced his resignation on August 17, 1999. Herbert Mertin was appointed to his successor on September 22, 1999.

In addition, he was a member of the Board of Guarantors of the Landesbank Rheinland-Pfalz , the Board of Trustees of the Stefan Morsch Foundation , the Board of Trustees of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation , the Villa Lessing - Liberale Stiftung Saar , on the board of the animal protection association Arche Noah, on the board of the German Gemmological Society and on the Board of Trustees of the German Gemstone Research Foundation.

Awards

Shortly before his death, Prime Minister Kurt Beck appointed him to the judiciary for his services .

Since July 1, 2003, the special needs school with the special focus on holistic and motor development in Idar-Oberstein has been called the “Peter-Caesar-School”.

In Trier, the Peter Caesar House of Starthilfe Trier eV bears his name.
