from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Doig (born October 27, 1911 in Lochgelly , Fife , † October 31, 1996 in Wormit , Fife) was a Scottish politician of the Labor Party .

Life

Peter Doig was born in Lochgelly in 1911 as one of four sons of a miner. He attended Blackness School , which he left at the age of 14. First he worked in bakeries, then as a truck driver. During the Second World War , Doig volunteered with the RAF and was deployed in a transport unit, first in Norway, then in Southeast Asia. At both locations he almost lost his life and could only save himself happily. After the end of the war, Doig worked in Dundeer bakeries again. He was a member of the Transport and General Workers' Union .

Political career

In 1930 Doig joined the Labor Party. In 1953 he was elected to the Dundee City Council for the party . Soon he held the office of town treasurer. In the general election in 1959 , Doig ran for the first time to national elections. He applied for the mandate of the constituency of Aberdeen South , but could not prevail against the incumbent unionist Priscilla Buchan .

After John Strachey , who had represented the Dundee West constituency since its inception in 1950 in the House of Commons , died in 1963, by-elections were required in the constituency. To these, the Labor Party set up Doig as Strachey's successor. Doig won the elections with a share of the vote of 50.4% and he subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time. He defended his mandate in the regular elections that followed in 1964 , as well as in the 1966 , 1970 and February and October 1974 elections . At the general election in 1979 Doig has not raced for more. His party colleague Ernie Ross held the mandate .

A total of 608 speeches by Doig are recorded in Parliament.
