Peter Engel (painter)

Peter Engel (born August 6, 1944 in Birstein ; † July 21, 2014 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German artist and teacher at the Städelschule in Frankfurt .

biography

Engel came from a working class family. From 1961 to 1964 he completed an apprenticeship as an offset printer. He then studied at the Städelschule HfBK Frankfurt am Main until 1967 , with Johannes Schreiter , among others . His studies took him to London (1967) and northern England (1968–1970 and 1974).

From 1974 to 1992 Engel worked as a lecturer for painting technique in the basic semesters of the Städelschule. He also taught at the evening school there from 1980 to 1985. From 1980 he had a studio at Arnsburger Straße 76 and showed his works at monthly exhibitions until the end of 1981. In 1982 he bought a house in Creglingen -Freudenbach (Baden-Württemberg). In 2003 his wife Margit Baumgarten-Engel died.

Engel was a representative of realism . His oeuvre mainly includes paintings (still life of food, portraits) as well as pencil drawings, lithographs, pastels and glass painting . Works by him can be found in the collections of the Museum for Contemporary Glass Painting in Langen and the Historisches Museum Frankfurt .
