Peter Everard Coleman (born August 28, 1928 in London , † December 27, 2001 in Salisbury ) was Bishop of Suffragan Crediton in Exeter (1984-1996).

Life

Peter Edward Coleman went to school in Haileybury . After serving in the Royal Horse Guards and the Royal Artillery, he studied law at King's College, London. Most influenced by the quorum's religious life, however, he chose to seek sacred ordinations.

After training at Westcott House , Cambridge, he spent three years as a pastor in St. Francis Church, Bedminster, then became secretary of the Christian Student Movement and associated this with a parish in St. Helen's Church , Bishopsgate, in the City of London .

In 1960 he returned to King's College as a faculty member and took the opportunity to resume his law studies.

Coleman left London in 1966 to become vicar at Clifton Cathedral , Bristol, and also chaplain at Bristol University .

In 1968 he published a Christian Dealing with Television which drew on his own involvement in radio broadcasting in Bristol.

Coleman's time as archdeacon of Worcester and Canon Residuary of Worcester Cathedral from 1981 to 1984 was too short, there to have a big impact, but it was obvious that he would give his best contribution to the life of the Church as a bishop.

He was a member of the General Synod from 1974 to 1981 and again from 1990 to 1995.

Coleman was Provost of the Western Division of the Woodard Schools from 1992 until the time of his death, and also Chairman of the Tantur Ecumenical Institute , Jerusalem.

In retirement, he served as Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Bath and Wells .

On May 14, 1960 he married the interpreter Elisabeth Donata Regina Emma Clementine Princess Reuss zu Köstritz (born June 8, 1932 in Vienna), daughter of Prince Heinrich XXXIX. Reuss zu Köstritz (1891–1946) and Countess Antonia Emma Elisabeth zu Castell-Castell (1896–1971)

Peter E. Coleman died on December 27, 2001 in a car accident near Salisbury.

progeny

Peter E. Coleman and Elisabeth Donata had two sons and two daughters:

  • Antonia Emma Elizabeth Coleman (born August 22, 1961)
  • Basil Henry Coleman (born May 1, 1963)
  • Bennedict Amadeus Michael Coleman (born September 17, 1965)
  • Elena Louise Regina Coleman (born April 21, 1969)

Act

Peter Everard Coleman was a scholar and teacher, and his interest in ethics benefited from the analytical element of his lawyer training. His "Christian attitude towards homosexuality" ( Christian Attitudes to Homosexuality , published in 1980) provided a historical overview of the biblical, historical and legal background of the current debate about the Church's attitude towards homosexuals.

At King's College , London, where he taught as a chaplain and lecturer in ethics from 1960 to 1966, he was involved in the formation of the priesthood and during his ten years in Bristol was responsible for the coordination of formation and the establishment of a school in the diocese Bristol .

As an auxiliary bishop, he was valued for his intellectual abilities. He was with the then Bishop of Exeter, Hewlett Thompson , who worked primarily as a pastor, joint editor of the magazine "Theology".
