Kees Olthuis

Kees Olthuis (born November 28, 1940 in Amsterdam - † October 16, 2019 ) was a Dutch bassoonist , pianist and composer .

Life

He studied bassoon and piano at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. For more than twenty years he was a member of the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble (Dutch wind orchestra) . Until 2005 he played bassoon with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and worked as a lecturer at the Conservatory in Amsterdam.

His work includes operas , chamber music and music for the theater .

Awards

In 1972 he won second prize in a competition by the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble .

  • De Gans (dt. Die Gans) (1982) , chamber opera, libretto : Jean Paul Franssens, premiered 1983 at the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp
  • Theseusfantasie (1984), symphonic poem, staged several times by Bernard Haitink
  • Jour de fête (1987), commissioned work on the 40th birthday of Radio Netherlands International
  • Het hemelse fagotje (Eng. The heavenly bassoon) in collaboration with Annie MG Schmidt
  • Het ei (Eng. The Egg) , symphonic poem , premiered in 1992, Haags Blazers Ensemble
  • De naam van de maan (Eng. The name of the moon) , youth opera, libretto: Annie MG Schmidt and Flip van Duyn, premiered in 1992 at the Amsterdamer Musiktheater
  • Europera , symphonic poetry, libretto: Flip van Duyn, premiered in 1993 in St. Peter's Church in Leiden
  • François Guyon , opera, libretto: Ruud van Megen , WP April 15, 1996, in the Theater de Veste , on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the city of Delft
  • Serenade in honor of the Dutch Youth String Orchestra under the direction of Roland Kieft ( conductor )
  • Willem Russell Strijkkwartet , the manuscript was auctioned off at Christie's auction house in 1993 for the benefit of the Nationaal Muziekinstrumenten Fonds (German National Musical Instrument Fund of the Netherlands)
  • Capriccio for bassoon and string quintet (2000), composed for the Friends of the Concertgebouw Orchestra
  • Three works (procession for brass music , a masquerade and a figuration for orchestra ) commissioned by the Orkest van het Oosten (German Orchestra of the East) for the festival in 2000
  • Jizô , work for orchestra
  • Voyage à l'horizon ..... Seul ..... , piano trio
