Peter Flötner (also Flatner, Flettner, * around 1490 in Thurgau ; † October 23, 1546 in Nuremberg ) was a builder, sculptor, gold and silversmith, graphic artist , medalist and carver in Nuremberg.

Life

Peter Flötner probably learned from Adolf Daucher in Augsburg . There he is said to have contributed significantly to the choir stalls of the Fugger Chapel, completed in 1518, under the guidance of his master . In Daucher's workshop, Flötner also carried out goldsmith work and his own furniture designs. After a stay in Italy, Flötner first settled in Ansbach as a master craftsman. In 1522 he moved to Nuremberg and took the citizenship oath there in 1523.

As a builder, Flötner was self-taught. He dealt scientifically with the writings of Vitruvius . Two years after his death, in 1548, Petreius in Nuremberg published the first German-language edition of Vitruvius, which is largely based on the work of Flötner.

Flötner and his work received the greatest attention around 1900. Albrecht Haupt (see below) even saw him as "the greatest and finest German architect of that time, the true pioneer of Italian architecture in the north". Edmund Braun (see below) emphasizes “the great importance of Flötner for the Renaissance art of Nuremberg and the German south, he radiates similar powers as had emanated from Dürer a generation earlier . The term 'genius' is not too exaggerated for Flötner's versatile work ”.

After the exhibition at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum on the 400th anniversary of his death in autumn 1945, the artist was largely forgotten again. October 24, 2014 to January 18, 2015 took place in Albrecht Dürer's House in Nuremberg, "Peter Flötner exhibition. Renaissance in Nuremberg ”.

His grave is in the Johannisfriedhof .

Works

The design and the artistic design of the Hirsvogel Hall in Nuremberg are essentially Flötner's work. He was significantly involved in the neighboring Tucherschloss . The triumphal arch for Emperor Charles V , which no longer exists today, was also a work of Flötner. As a late work, Flötner is also credited with designing the facade of the Ottheinrich building at Heidelberg Castle. However, the attribution is not considered certain.
