Peter Graßmann

Peter Graßmann (born July 28, 1873 in Munich , † October 25, 1939 in Berlin ) was a German trade unionist and social democratic politician.

Live and act

Graßmann's father was a station servant. After primary school, Graßmann attended a higher school (Latin school) but dropped out early. After school he did an apprenticeship as a typesetter and worked in this profession until 1903.

In 1893 he joined both the union and the SPD. As early as 1894, Graßmann was chairman of the trade union cartel in Solingen . From December 1903 to 1908 he was district director of the Association of German Book Printers for Rhineland and Westphalia , based in Essen . In addition, from 1905 he was assistant chairman in the letterpress arbitration tribunal. From 1908 to 1919 Graßmann was second chairman of the main board of the printing union and from 1919 to 1933 deputy chairman of the ADGB . In addition, from 1920 to 1924 he was co-chair of the central working group of trade unions and employers' associations. He was also active in the International Trade Union Confederation and a member of the Provisional Reich Economic Council .

From May 1924 to November 1932, Graßmann was a member of the Reichstag for constituency 34. After that, until 1933 he was a member of the Reichstag through the SPD's list of proposals.

During the National Socialist era , Graßmann was imprisoned for several months.
