Peter Hasslacher

Petrus or Peter Haßlacher (born August 14, 1810 in Koblenz , † July 5, 1876 in Paris ) was a Jesuit who worked as a people's missionary after 1848 .

Life

Born as the son of a Koblenz lawyer, Haßlacher studied medicine in Bonn and Würzburg . In 1830 he became a member of the old Bonn fraternity .

For membership in the fraternity and involvement in political unrest, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 1833 and imprisoned in Berlin , Magdeburg and on Ehrenbreitstein .

One month after his pardon in February 1840, he entered the Society of Jesus as a novice and was ordained a priest in September 1844. Until 1849 he worked as a cathedral preacher in Strasbourg .

From 1850 Haßlacher traversed Germany as a people's missionary , especially the Rhineland and Western Palatinate , but also large parts of Prussia . He endeavored to renew Catholicism and to defend it against materialism and the scientific zeitgeist. In 1856 he put in Paderborn the professed vows on, in May 1858, he preached every day in Berlin. Due to a lung disease, he was soon unable to take part in the popular missions, but until 1862 he still held religious retreats in many places.

Called back to France in 1863, Father Haßlacher lived with a noble family near Marseille from 1864–66 to consolidate his health . In 1866 he became superior of his order in Paris and pastor of the German community there. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 the Jesuit stayed briefly in Bonn, but returned to Paris in 1872, where he died in 1876.

He was the uncle of the industrialist and member of the Reichstag, Johann Jacob Haßlacher (1869–1940) and of the large American entrepreneur Jacob Hasslacher (1852–1921).
