Peter Hansen (painter)
Peter Marius Hansen (born May 13, 1868 in Faaborg ; † October 6, 1928 there ) was a Danish painter . He belonged to the Fyborner artists' colony , an association of painters living and working on the island of Funen .
Life
family
Hansen grew up in a creative environment. The house of his father, the decorative painter Peter Syrak Hansen, was a popular meeting place for painters in the area. Peter Hansen had three siblings. His sister Anna married the painter Fritz Syberg in 1894 and made a name for herself as a painter as Anna Syberg . After her death, Syberg married her sister Marie. The painter Ernst Syberg was his nephew.
education
Hansen attended Denmark's Technical University in Copenhagen before he switched to the free art school Kunstnernen Frie Studieskoler in 1885 , which had been established a few years earlier as an alternative to the traditional art academy. His teacher was the Bornholm painter Kristian Zahrtmann . After him, the training facility later became known as Zahrtmanns Schule . Hansen's classmates included Johannes Larsen , Poul S. Christiansen, and Fritz Syberberg. During his training, Peter Hansen also worked as a parliamentary stenographer and as a theater painter for Thorolf Pedersen at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen.
Inspired by Zahrtmann, the students paid little attention to the traditions of academic Danish painting in their work. They went into the great outdoors and used strong colors to paint landscapes, people and rural properties in the style of realism and naturalism . They founded the Fünen-Maler artists' colony , the core of which was Hansen, Syberg and Larsen. Later, under the influence of Theodor Philipsen , the style of the group approached French Impressionism . The Fyborner family received financial support from the art collector Wilhelm Hansen , a childhood friend of Peter Hansen.
Create
On study trips to Italy and Sweden, sometimes together with Zahrtmann and other students, Hansen looked for new impressions. Most of Hansen's paintings can be classified as genre paintings with staffages.
After Hansen moved to Copenhagen with his family in 1905, he expanded his motifs. He liked to sketch and paint the lively district around Enghave Plads with strollers, yellow trams, children playing and Sunday drivers.
Some critics initially disparaged the group's work as bond painting , peasant painting . They criticized the choice of motifs, technology and strong colors. Criticism fell silent when the Faaborg Museum was built in 1910 especially for the works of painters, architects, sculptors and furniture designers from Funen.
Hansen's works are kept in the National Museum in Stockholm , the Art Museum in Gothenburg , the Faaborg Museum in Central Jutland and the small Johannes Larsen Museum in Kerteminde .
