Peter Murphy (2006)

Peter John Joseph Murphy (born July 11, 1957 near Northampton , England ) is a British musician who gained international fame as the front man of the Bauhaus band . Due to his early involvement in the Gothic Rock music genre , he is nicknamed "Godfather of Goth".

biography

Peter Murphy was born the youngest of nine children. His parents came from the working class and raised their children strictly Catholic.

From 1978 to 1983 Peter Murphy was a singer in the Bauhaus group . After the band split up in 1983, he founded the group Dalis Car with Mick Karn , but they only released one album called The Waking Hour .

In 1984, Dalis Car split, after which Peter Murphy began a solo career. Two years later his first album ( Should the World Fail to Fall Apart ) was released, on which the former Bauhaus member Daniel Ash also participated.

It wasn't until 1990 that he had a hit with the song Cuts You Up , which was recorded on the album Deep . This song became the "American Modern Rock Hit of the Year" and stayed at the top of the US charts for seven weeks. The LP itself reached number 44 in the album charts. However, Peter Murphy could not repeat this success immediately, the follow-up album Holy Smoke only made it to number 108.

In the 1980s, Murphy converted to Islam , where he was very much influenced by Sufism (Islamic mysticism ). Since 1992 he has lived with his wife Beyhan (née Faulkes, founder and director of “ Modern Dance Turkey ”) and their children Hurihan (* 1988) and Adem (* 1991) in Ankara ( Turkey ). Among other things, he worked there with the musician Mercan Dede , who makes a kind of modern Sufi music.

Peter Murphy's distinctive facial features - mainly the high cheekbones - and his exaggerated facial expressions and gestures during early Bauhaus concerts served James O'Barr as a template for his cartoon character Eric Draven ( The Crow ).

In 2011 the solo and Bauhaus fanatics came out with the comeback Ninth . Critics celebrated the album unanimously. Ulf Kubanke from Laut.de classified the CD as “a real bridge album; Gothic Rock as a congenial partner of a philanthropic worldview in the service of love, shaped by Muslim Sufism. "

In 2013, Murphy was arrested in Los Angeles and given a three-year suspended sentence. This was ruled by a court in Los Angeles on October 14, 2013, after the Bauhaus front man was arrested in the spring for hit-and-run, drug-driving, and methamphetamine possession. He is also required to attend a 45-day meeting of anonymous drug addicts and do ten days of community service. Murphy announced through his attorney Robert Wilson that he was "very satisfied" with the guilty verdict. In 2019, Peter Murphy suffered a serious heart attack. After two bypass operations, he came back in August.
