Peter Jonas Bergius (born July 6, 1730 in Eriksstad, Småland province , † July 10, 1790 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish physician and scientist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " PJBergius ".

Life

Peter Jonas Bergius was the youngest of seven children. The parents died early. At the age of 16 he went to Lund University , initially to study theology. He later went to Uppsala and studied botany and medicine with Carl von Linné and Nils Rosén von Rosenstein . In 1755 he went to Stockholm and opened a medical practice. He published books and publications on medicine and botany. In 1761, a professorship for natural history and pharmacy was established for Bergius at the Collegium medicum . In 1758 he was elected a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences , 1767 a member of the Leopoldina , 1778 a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and 1785 a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In December 1776 he was elected an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .

Together with his brother Bengt (1723–1784) Bergius founded the Bergianska trädgården in Stockholm .

Honors

In his honor, the plant genera Bergia L. and Bergella (A.Gray) Schnizl. named from the family of the Tännelgewächse (Elatinaceae).
