Peter Karmanos (born March 11, 1943 in Detroit , Michigan ) is a Greek - American entrepreneur . He became known as a founding member and board member of Compuware and as the owner of the ice hockey franchises Carolina Hurricanes , Plymouth Whalers and Florida Everblades .

Peter Karmanos was born the son of Greek immigrants from Messenia . He only learned to speak English in elementary school. At Henry Ford High School he met his future wife Barbara Ann, whom he married in 1965. He graduated from Wayne State University . His wife died of cancer on January 10, 1989 at the age of 46. In 1995 he donated US $ 15 million to the Michigan Cancer Foundation in their memory. This was later renamed the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute at the proposal of the foundation .

In the mid-1970s, Peter Karmanos co-founded the Detroit Compuware Hockey Organization . The program encompassed all ages of junior ice hockey . Karmanos later funded youth ice hockey programs in southern Michigan. Its teams have already had several successes in national and international tournaments. In 1998 he was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for his services to ice hockey.

Karmanos is also active in the Detroit Greek community. He is married to filmmaker Danialle Karmanos and has three children and 9 grandchildren.

Entrepreneurial activity

In his youth, Peter Karmanos worked in his parents' restaurant. Together with Thomas Thewes and Allen Cutting , he founded the IT company Compuware in Detroit in 1973 .

At the end of 1989, Karmanos received the opportunity to build a franchise in Detroit from the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League . From 1990 it was active under the name Detroit Compuware Ambassadors , which later bore the names Detroit Junior Red Wings and Detroit Whalers . From 1997 to 2015 it was called Plymouth Whalers , before Karmanos sold it after 25 years and it subsequently traded under the name Flint Firebirds .

In 1994, Karmanos bought the NHL team Hartford Whalers . After he assured, despite the team's financial problems, that the team would stay in Hartford , Connecticut, for the time being. Due to the difficult financial situation in the search for sponsors, due to the geographic location (there were several NHL teams in the vicinity), Karmanos moved the franchise to North Carolina in 1997 and renamed the team to Carolina Hurricanes . The Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in 2006.

In 2010, Karmanos received the Bill Long Award for his services to the Ontario Hockey League . In June 2015 he was also honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .

In January 2018, Karmanos gave the majority of the Carolina Hurricanes to Texan Tom Dundon .
