Peter Koj

Peter Koj (born August 24, 1938 in Hindenburg ) is a German English and Romance scholar , former teacher and non-fiction author on the Portuguese language and culture.

Live and act

From 1976 to 1983 he taught at the German School in Lisbon (most recently as deputy headmaster). After his return in 1983 he taught until 2000 Portuguese at Hamburg High School Hochrad and was checking Officer for Portuguese at the Studienkolleg Hamburg. Since the mid-1980s he has been active in the German-Portuguese Society , the Kulturkreis Portugal in Hamburg and the Portuguese-Hanseatic Society (PHG) and is involved as a mediator between Portuguese culture and the Hanseatic City of Hamburg .

In an article published in the taz on July 7, 1989 , Hamburg forgot its Portuguese , he drew attention to the previously barely registered importance of Portuguese Jews for the Hanseatic city .

He is a co-founder of the Portuguese-Hanseatic Society (PHG), who gave it its name, and has been Vice-President or 1st Chairman since it was founded in August 1996 (until 2016). He was editor-in-chief of the PHG magazine Portugal-Post until 2011 and is still a member of the editorial team today (not to be confused with the newspaper Portugal Post ). In addition to articles on the respective topic of the issue, he regularly delivers four mostly bilingual columns. He was responsible for the cooperation with corresponding societies in Bremen (Chave Lusófona eV) and Cuxhaven ( German-Portuguese Cultural Association eV ), the so-called Triângulo do Mar do Norte (German: North Sea Triangle).

Hamburg owes Peter Koj the Amália-Rodrigues-Weg in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld with the bilingual plaque for Portugal's Fado icon Amália Rodrigues (inauguration August 28, 2010).

Awards

• 1996: Awarded the Grand Prize of the Fundação Casa da Cultura de Língua Portuguesa at the University of Porto for his services to the spread of the Portuguese language and culture .
• 2004: was it in Berlin by the Portuguese monthly newspaper Portugal Post (formerly Dortmund now Berlin as PT Post ) of Portugaleser presented in recognition of his intercultural activities
• 2018: He was awarded the medal for faithful work in the service of the people (in silver) by the Hamburg Senate
