Peter Kurz (born November 6, 1962 in Mannheim ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He has been Lord Mayor of Mannheim since 2007 .

Life

Peter Kurz attended the Tulla-Gymnasium in Mannheim. From 1983 to 1989 he studied law at the universities of Mannheim and Heidelberg and passed his first state examination in 1989. He then worked as a trainee lawyer in Mannheim (district and regional court, public prosecutor's office, administrative court, law firm), Speyer ( University of Administrative Sciences ), Heidelberg (tax office) and San Diego (law firm). In 1992 he passed his second state examination and became an assistant at the chair for civil law, commercial and business law at the University of Mannheim . In 1994 Peter Kurz became a judge at the Karlsruhe Administrative Court . A year later he received his doctorate . Peter Kurz is married and has two children.

politics

Kurz joined the SPD as a student and was involved with the Jusos . From 1984 to 1989 he was the district advisory council of Schwetzingerstadt / Oststadt in Mannheim, then until 1999 city council in Mannheim and member of various supervisory boards. In 1985 Peter Kurz founded the "Biotopia" association, which he led until the beginning of 1999. At the beginning of 1994, Kurz took over the chairmanship of the SPD local council faction and held the office until 1999. In 1995 he became a member of the SPD state executive in Baden-Württemberg (until 2005). Kurz took up the post of full-time mayor for education, culture and sport in Mannheim in 1999. During his tenure as educational mayor, it was decided to set up the first all-day elementary school in Mannheim. On June 17, 2007, Peter Kurz was elected Lord Mayor to succeed Gerhard Widder (SPD). In 2010 Peter Kurz successfully campaigned for the preservation of the job center. On June 14, 2015 he received 46.8% of the votes in the first ballot of the OB election and on July 8, he was re-elected for a second term in the second ballot with 52% of the votes against Peter Rosenberger (CDU).

Peter Kurz has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the European Society for Young Academics since January 2009. In December 2014 Mannheim was awarded the title UNESCO City of Music. The application was particularly driven by Kurz.

In 2018, Kurz was elected President of the Baden-Württemberg Association of Cities and the Presidium of the Association of Cities in Germany .

Kurz has been chairman of the Carlo Schmid Foundation since April 2019 .

European and international engagement

From April 2018 to January 2020, Peter Kurz represented the German Association of Cities in the European Committee of the Regions. He has been a deputy member since January 2020.

At the European level, Peter Kurz has also been a deputy member of the main committee of the German section in the Council of European Municipalities and Regions since 2010 . CEMR represents the interests of around 100,000 local authorities across Europe. The international work of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions continues in the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). Here Peter Kurz is one of five German municipal representatives on the World Council and one of two German mayors in the executive office.

Peter Kurz was actively involved in the founding of the Global Parliament of Mayors (GPM) in 2016 and was its Vice-Chairman until November 2019. At the annual general meeting of the GPM, which took place from November 9th to 11th, 2019 in Durban, South Africa, Peter Kurz was appointed chairman. The GPM is a global movement of mayors that campaigns for the rights of cities and their mayors - and the “right to the city”. It is a member of the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments.

From 17.-20. October 2016 Peter Kurz took part in the HABITAT III conference of the United Nations in Quito, Ecuador. The head of the city of Mannheim had the opportunity, as one of only 40 mayors from all over the world, to make a statement at the World Assembly of Mayors and to make a plea for the importance of the cities.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, which are implemented in Mannheim through the Mannheim 2030 model, play an important role in international engagement. As the first German city representative, Peter Kurz had the opportunity at the climate and SDG summit in New York in September 2019 to present a so-called “voluntary local review” and thus the strategies of the city of Mannheim for the implementation of the SDGs at the municipal level. At this summit, which lasted several days, Peter Kurz also represented the UCLG, the GPM and the CEMR.

Peter Kurz was a speaker at both the 9th World Urban Forum 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the 10th World Urban Forum 2020 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which was hosted by UN-Habitat. Here, too, he spoke about the strategies of the city of Mannheim to implement the sustainability goals of the UN at the municipal level.

In November 2010, Peter Kurz was awarded the specially made "Star of David" award by the UJA Federation New York.
