from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Marti (born July 22, 1949 ) is a Swiss civil engineer . From 1990 to 2014 he was Professor of Structural Analysis and Design at ETH Zurich .

Life

Peter Marti grew up as the son of a master builder family in the Swiss mountain canton of Glarus. After graduating as a civil engineer from the ETH Zurich , he carried out a series of large-scale tests on reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete slabs as a research assistant to Bruno Thürlimann and received his doctorate in 1980 with a thesis on the application of plasticity theory to reinforced concrete . He then continued to work as a research engineer and lecturer at the ETH Zurich until 1982.

From 1982 to 1987 he was Associate Professor of Structural Engineering and Manager of Structural Research Laboratories at the University of Toronto . After returning to Switzerland, from 1987 to 1990 he was director of VSL International and chief technical officer of the VSL group, which works in the field of prestressing technology. In October 1990 Peter Marti was appointed Full Professor of Structural Analysis and Design at ETH Zurich , where he retired on July 31, 2014 after 24 years of activity.

Act

His research at the University of Toronto focused on questions about the behavior of plate and shell elements made of reinforced and prestressed concrete under any combination of stresses. In order to be able to experimentally validate the theoretical models developed for this purpose, he developed a test facility that was unique in the world at the time, the “Shell Element Tester”.

During his years as a full professor at the ETH Zurich , he was responsible for around a dozen different lectures and, with over 30 doctoral students, devoted himself to a wide range of research topics in solid and bridge construction . He was also actively involved in numerous university committees. Among other things, he was head of the Institute for Structural Analysis and Design , President of the Conference of Lecturers at ETH , Head of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering and the ETH President's delegate for professorial elections.

In 1995 he founded the Society for Civil Engineering, which he chaired from 1995 to 2007 and of which he is honorary president today. He also worked in various professional organizations, the standardization project "led Swiss code " as chairman to succeed and worked as a consulting engineer, consultant and jury member for competitions countless demanding projects of construction , bridge and tunnel construction . Last but not least, he wrote a comprehensive work on structural engineering , which was published in German in 2012 and in English in 2013 and received such a positive reception that a second edition had to be prepared after a short time.

Honors

In 2012 he was awarded the “golden owl”, an award given by ETH students for particularly committed teachers who offer excellent teaching. In 2019 he received the Medal of Merit from the fédération internationale du béton (fib) .
