Peter Moore Spear

Peter Moore Speer (born December 29, 1862 in Oil City , Venango County , Pennsylvania , †  August 3, 1933 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1913 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Peter Speer attended the public schools in his home country, Allegheny College in Meadville and Westminster College in New Wilmington . In 1887 he graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1889, he began to work in Oil City in this profession. Between 1891 and 1893 Speer was a district attorney in Venango County there; from 1895 to 1906 he was the legal representative of the City of Oil City. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1897 and 1898 .

In the 1910 congressional election , Speer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 28th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Nelson Platt Wheeler on March 4, 1911 . Since he was not confirmed in 1912, he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1913 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Speer initially practiced as a lawyer in Oil City again. In 1918 he moved his residence and law firm to New York City. There he worked in various positions for Standard Oil between 1918 and 1932 . Initially he worked for this company as a consultant until 1922. From 1922 to 1928 he was a member of the executive board and from 1928 to 1932 its vice-president. After that, he retired. Peter Speer died in New York on August 3, 1933.
