Peter Forbes Ricketts, Baron Ricketts , GCMG , GCVO (born September 30, 1952 in Royal Sutton Coldfield , Warwickshire , England ) is a former British diplomat who was, among other things, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to NATO from 2003 to 2006 , from 2006 to 2010 State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister from 2010 to 2012 and Ambassador to France between 2012 and 2016 . 2016 he was appointed as Baron Ricketts into the nobility raised and thus a member of the upper house ( House of Lords ) .

Life

Studies and entry into the diplomatic service

Peter Forbes Ricketts graduated after attending the 1527 founded Bishop Vesey's Grammar School in Royal Sutton Coldfield a degree in English Literature at Pembroke College of Oxford University . He joined after the end of 1974 in the diplomatic service (HM Diplomatic Service) Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Foreign and Commonwealth Office ) and found in the subsequent period numerous uses of representations abroad and in the foreign ministry. In 2003, Sir Peter Ricketts took over from Sir Emyr Jones Parry the post of Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to NATO and remained in this post until 2006, when Sir Stewart Eldon succeeded him there. He then replaced Sir Michael Jay as Permanent Under-Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in 2006 , making him the highest official of this ministry until he was replaced by Sir Simon Fraser in 2010. In 2009, he witnessed the Chilcot report , which was the outcome of a British public inquiry into Britain's role in the Iraq war . In 2010, he took over the newly created position of National Security Adviser from Prime Minister David Cameron and held this position until 2012, when Sir Kim Darroch succeeded him. As chairman of the National Security Council , he was instrumental in shaping the UK's foreign policy . In 2011 he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG).

Most recently Sir Peter Ricketts succeeded Sir Peter Westmacott as Ambassador to France in 2012 and remained in this top diplomatic post until his retirement in 2016. He was then succeeded by Sir Julian King . In 2014 he was also awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO).

After retiring from the diplomatic service, he was promoted to life peer of the Peerage of the United Kingdom as a Baron Ricketts , of Shortlands in the County of Kent, on the basis of the Life Peerages Act 1958 by a letters patent dated October 17, 2016 and thus a member of the House of Lords , to which he belongs as a crossbencher . He was also a visiting professor at King's College London and Chief Scientist (Senior Associate Fellow ) at the Royal United Services Institute for Defense and Security Studies (RUSI).
