Peter Rinck
Peter Rinck (* 1429 in Cologne ; † February 8, 1501 ibid) was a doctor of law and rector at the medieval University of Cologne . His family belonged to the Cologne patriciate .
family
Peter Rinck was the son of the Hanseatic merchant Johann Rinck , who came from Korbach in Hesse and settled in Cologne, and his wife Gertrud von Blitterswich (also Bätterswigh). Within a few years Johann Rinck managed to create a huge trading empire and thus to become one of the richest and most influential citizens of Cologne. He and his family lived on the street Am Rinkenpfuhl near the Mauritius Church located Rinkenhof . The Rinkenhof was a splendid building for the time, the stair tower of which was built in 1511 was only demolished in November 1911. Because of these living conditions, the parents were able to give their three children the best possible education.
education
Peter Rinck was probably a student of the Burses that were forming in the big cities after initial home instruction and studied from 1444 in Erfurt , 1451 in Paris and in 1452 returned to Cologne. He received his doctorate in Pavia in 1459 as Doctor iuris utriusque and then worked at the law faculty of his hometown. In 1484 he was elected rector there.
Legal scholar and patron
After the death of his father in 1464, Peter Rinck inherited a large fortune, which he kept but did not want to increase. He did not have the commercial and political skills of his father, but he did have his piety. Around 1459 he entered the Cologne Charterhouse as a novice . However, since he was unable to cope with the hard rules of Carthusian life for health reasons, he limited himself to becoming a special benefactor of the Cologne order. After the fire in the Kartausen library in 1451, he was the main sponsor of the reconstruction. In 1501 he founded a foundation for foundlings and orphans, whose income made it possible to build an orphanage in 1523.
Peter Rinck taught at the city's old university until his death. He was buried on February 8, 1501 in the small cloister of the Charterhouse in the Severinsviertel . He left the Carthusians among other things the altar of the cross and Thomas. These works are now in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum .
A painting in the Cologne City Museum also commemorates Peter Rinck . It is his portrait (oil on wood) and was created around 1475/80. The founder portrait once belonged as a wing to the Marien Altar of the St. Barbara Charterhouse in Cologne ; its counterpart shows Rinck's father Johann as the second donor .
