Peter Rittig (* 1789 in Koblenz , † August 14, 1840 in Rome ) was a German painter .

Life

Before 1808 Rittig trained in Berlin, from 1808 to 1816 studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and in the atelier of Jacques-Louis David in Paris . From 1816 he lived in Rome, in the circle of artists around Johann Friedrich Overbeck , in 1821 he became a member of the composing association for sacred art founded by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and his artist friends Johann Friedrich Overbeck , Carl Begas and Peter von Hess . In 1824 Rittig was involved in the Roman exhibition of German artists in Via Margutta with the paintings Rest on the Flight , The Good Samaritan and Arrival of Young Tobias ' Weds. a. and Moritz Daniel Oppenheim was involved. From 1824 to 1830 and 1838 Rittig took part in the Berlin Academy Exhibition. He worked primarily as a history and genre painter .
