Peter Rothen

Peter Rothen (* in Bonn ) is a German diplomat and has been Consul General in Shanghai since September 2014 .

Life

After graduating from high school , Rothen studied economics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg . After completing his studies with a diploma , he worked as a research assistant in Paris from 1978 to 1980 .

In 1980 he joined the Foreign Service and, after passing the career test for the higher civil service, found employment at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn and Berlin as well as at the embassies in Great Britain , South Africa and the Czech Republic .

After Rothen was Deputy Head of the Department for the European Union in the Foreign Office between 1995 and 1999 , he was Head of the Political Department of the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva until 2003 .

After a subsequent assignment as head of the department for human rights, international human rights protection, EU human rights policy and UNICEF (VN 06) at the Foreign Office in Berlin, he was a fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University between July 2008 and July 2009 .

From July 2009 to August 2014, Peter Rothen was Consul General in San Francisco. The administrative district of the Consulate General includes the states of Alaska , Hawaii , Idaho , Montana , Oregon , Washington , Wyoming , northern California and the suburbs of the United States in the Pacific .

He has been Consul General in Shanghai since September 2014 .
