Subject area "Biography"

Many of Schünemann's texts deal with the subject of biography . In addition to the author's monographs on Gottfried Benn , Georg Heym , Georg Trakl and Robert Walser, he also wrote numerous imagined life pictures by poets; he also deals with the topic in literary journals. In the fictional portraits, the poets can be found under extraordinary titles that also indicate the short period of time that is dealt with: Friedrich Hölderlin as Magister , Georg Trakl as the drug acquirer and Arthur Rimbaud as the commercial agent . Only the frontispiece of the book Die Nacht explains that the first-person narrator is Heinrich von Kleist , whose last hours of life are discussed here. The literary monographs bring psychological, artistic and historical perspectives to those portrayed in a very condensed form, but according to the Critical Lexicon of contemporary German literature , they do not take into account their “literary and lyrical works”. The lexicon judges the texts of Schünemann's poetic biographies, which are not always easy to read for the “non-literary scholar”, as being “stored in tight language: a worldview that has to be deciphered like a photographic negative, created from various overlays of intellectual history and individual fate ” .

"Trace of the father"

Schünemann's book Spur des Vaters (2001), which contains five portraits of writers and in which he tries to explain what traces the fathers of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Gottfried Benn, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing , Thomas Mann and Sigmund Freud had in literary works , attracted attention of sons left behind. For Schünemann, the respective starting point is not just the figure of the father, "but his death, which here is always the - imaginary, feared or longed for - death of the Father of God". In these essays, life and death are presented as intertwined processes, linguistically very condensed and mixed with knowledgeable psychological, literary and biographical details, the overabundance of which also provoked criticism. The author tries “often to bring about syntheses by merging several metaphors or images. In interaction with other stylistic peculiarities: bulky parentheses , superfluous rows, parallelisms , multiple attributions , the tendency to metaphorize leads to a 'poetization' of the topic, which almost inevitably means that the texts move away from their usually pleasantly clearly defined starting point. Many a passage remains incomprehensible because it is overloaded with syntax and content ” .

Quote

  • "You no longer determine the pictures, but line up the thousand mirrors in which they would have broken, cut through the thousand upon thousand eyeballs that stared at their origin, painted it, set it on fragile notes, wrote on the floor."
