Peter Staettmayer

Peter Stättmayer (born November 3, 1945 in Munich ; † October 18, 2018 in Herrsching am Ammersee ) was a German astronomer and author and long-time director of the Bavarian People's Observatory in Munich .
Life
Peter Stättmayer grew up in the Ramersdorf district in Munich. At first he could not study physics, but trained as a physics assistant. On his second educational path, he then studied electrical engineering. The trained electrical engineer Stättmayer drew attention to himself with special photos, including a picture of comet C / 1975 V1 (West) in 1976 . A good 20 years later he made a series of photos of the comet Hale-Bopp . In the mid-1980s he developed a measuring field eyepiece , which is sold by Celestron , among others .
Stättmayer headed the Bavarian People's Observatory in Munich from 1991 to 2015 (as the successor to Hans Oberndorfer ) and was repeatedly called upon as an expert by the press and television .
He also translated the textbook Der Weltraum: Planets, Stars, Galaxies and the children's books Astronomy and the Pictorial Atlas of Space .
The asteroid (3398) Stättmayer was named after him.
Peter Stättmayer died after a brief serious illness and was buried at the Ostfriedhof .
