A good 20 years later he made a series of photos of the comet Hale-Bopp . In the mid-1980s he developed a measuring field eyepiece , which is sold by Celestron , among others .

Stättmayer headed the Bavarian People's Observatory in Munich from 1991 to 2015 (as the successor to Hans Oberndorfer ) and was repeatedly called upon as an expert by the press and television .

He also translated the textbook Der Weltraum: Planets, Stars, Galaxies and the children's books Astronomy and the Pictorial Atlas of Space .

The asteroid (3398) Stättmayer was named after him.
