Peter Steinforth

Peter Steinforth (born May 20, 1923 in Berlin , † October 9, 1981 in Darmstadt ) was a German artist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Cologne , Peter Steinforth did military service and was taken prisoner of war . From 1945 he studied painting at the Berlin Academy of Arts with Karl Schmidt-Rottluff , Max Kaus and Cuno Fischer and had contact with Karl Hofer , among others . Steinforth was a co-founder of the Berlin artist group Der Igel , which also included Sigmund Hahn , Carl-Heinz Kliemann and Siegmund Lympasik . In September 1949 he exhibited together with this group at a traveling exhibition at the Zehlendorfer Galerie Schueler in the Kölnischer Kunstverein . From 1953 to 1956 he was on a scholarship from the Berlin Senate in Altea , Spain, where he met Eberhard Schlotter .

From 1956 he lived in Darmstadt, where he took over a city studio in 1960. He was soon one of the most influential figures on the Darmstadt art scene. Steinforth was a member of the New Darmstadt Secession and the West German Artists Association from 1960. Until 1961 he was a member of the board of the Darmstadt Secession artists' group. Between 1952 and 1982 Peter Steinforth took part in a total of nine major annual DKB exhibitions as a full member of the German Association of Artists .

Steinforth died in Darmstadt at the age of 68. Shortly before his death, he destroyed large parts of his work.
