Stewart's research interests are broad, but primarily focus on ancient sculpture. Like many of his colleagues, he not only researches the classical times of sculpture, but also repeatedly researches in comparatively marginal areas. For example, he examined the influences of Greco-Roman art on the art of Gandhara or provincial Roman sculptures. He is also interested in the modern reception of ancient statues and their collection history. He published a catalog of the collection of ancient statues in Wilton House .
