Peter Sulzer

Peter Sulzer (* 1932 in Karlsruhe ; † December 18, 2019 ) was a German architect , university professor and author .

Life

After studying painting at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg with Kurt Kranz , Peter Sulzer belonged to the first generation of students at the legendary Bauhaus successor institution, the Ulm School of Design , and was thus able to learn from important teachers such as a. Max Bill , Josef Albers or Johannes Itten gained an insight into the history of architecture, art and design, which would subsequently affect his entire work. 1958/1959 Sulzer graduated as an architect with Egon Eiermann . After a scholarship stay in Paris in 1959, where he first met the architect and designer Jean Prouvé , and after a trip to the USA in 1961, he became a freelance architect and lecturer at the HfG Ulm, where he previously studied before becoming a professor of architecture was appointed to the University of Stuttgart , where he taught from 1969 to 1997. Later, in addition to his work as an author, Sulzer mainly acted as exhibition organizer and chairman of the Simonshof Foundation.

In addition to his work as a professor, Peter Sulzer realized numerous architectural projects, including a school and a youth center. The Bauhäusle in Stuttgart , a student dormitory that is still inhabited by 30 students to this day, met with great interest in the public and in the media , which he realized together with his colleague Peter Hübner in 1982 and with over 200 students according to the motto "Learn by building it yourself". He gave his students a lot of freedom in planning and designing the individual rooms, and even today the Bauhäusle is always changing and a place of social interaction.

Simonshof Foundation

In 2001, Peter Sulzer and his wife, the photographer Erika Sulzer-Kleinemeier , founded the Simonshof Foundation, which has set itself the task of promoting art, culture, education and German-French cooperation and is based in unity with a museum for design in Gleisweiler in the south of the Palatinate . The foundation was established in memory of the couple's son, designer Friedrich Sulzer (1962–2000). It is a public foundation under civil law with legal capacity and offers exhibitions, seminars and workshops.

Activity as an author

In addition to various book publications on architectural theory and civil engineering , Peter Sulzer made a name for himself as the world's leading expert on the work of the French architect and designer Jean Prouvé . Sulzer has analyzed the designer's life and work in numerous publications and made the results known to an international audience. Lecture tours led him a. a. to Tokyo , Helsinki , Paris , London and many other cities.
