Peter Sykora (set designer)

Peter Sykora (born April 23, 1944 in Reichenberg ) is a German set designer for drama and music theater as well as a university lecturer for scenography .

Sykora first completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter at the Leipzig theater, then he moved to the Dresden University of Fine Arts . Engagements at the theaters in Görlitz and Zittau as well as the Berlin Maxim Gorki Theater followed . At the suggestion of Harry Kupfer, he worked for the first time as a set designer at the Dresden State Opera in 1974 (in the Dresden theater ).

In 1978 he came to Bayreuth for the first time , where he designed the equipment for the Flying Dutchman . In 1981 he moved from the GDR to the Federal Republic. Since then he has worked as a freelance set designer in Berlin, Cologne and many major European opera houses, including London , Los Angeles , Zurich , Hamburg , Stuttgart , Essen , Cologne , Tokyo and Copenhagen . Time and again, he also outfitted theater productions and worked on alternative venues.

In 1983, one of his main focuses was the Deutsche Oper Berlin . With Götz Friedrich he first worked on Faust's Damnation in 1983 , Turandot in 1986 , La Bohème in 1988 , Lohengrin and Mathis der Maler in 1990 , Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in 1993 , Carmina Burana in 1995 and Moses and Aron in 1999 . In 1990, Paul Flieder designed the short operas The Kapellmeister and The Maid as Mistress in the foyer, for John Dew he designed Andrea Chénier in 1994 .

In the field of dance theater, he designed the Ring Around the Ring for Maurice Béjart in 1990 , the " Tchaikovsky Trilogy" with Swan Lake , Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker for Peter Schaufuss from 1993 and Boris Blacher's Hamlet (1987) for Patrice Montagnon .

From 1984 onwards, one of his most important works was the equipment for Richard Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen with the so-called “time tunnel” in the Deutsche Oper Berlin .

Sykora also teaches as a professor of scenography at the Technical University of Berlin .
