Peter Truöl

Peter Truöl (born June 29, 1939 in Dresden ; † March 22, 2020 ) was a German-Swiss experimental physicist.

Life

Peter Truöl grew up in Bremen and studied mathematics, physics and chemistry in Göttingen and Zurich. In Göttingen he became a member of the Corps Hannovera . He received his doctorate from the University of Zurich in 1967 and continued his academic career at the University of California, Berkeley (1967–69) and as an assistant professor in Los Angeles (1969–70). In 1971 he returned to the University of Zurich for his habilitation, where he introduced particle physics into the curriculum. In 1988 Peter Truöl became full professor for experimental physics in Zurich. The research group he heads experimented as a partner in international working groups at the accelerator centers in Berkeley, Los Alamos, Brookhaven, Villigen ( Paul Scherrer Institute ), Geneva ( CERN ) and Hamburg ( DESY ).

In 1999 Truöl held a visiting professorship at Yale University , from 1999 to 2003 he was director of the Physics Institute at the University of Zurich, and from 2003 to 2006 dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences there.

From 2000 to 2003, Peter Truöl headed the Board of Trustees of the Adult Education Center in Zurich. From November 2007 to 2012 he chaired the Board of Science Alumni at the University of Zurich.
