Peter Wollny (born June 29, 1961 in Sevelen ) is a German musicologist and Bach researcher. He has been working at the Leipzig Bach Archive since 1993 and has been its director since 2014. He and his colleagues succeeded in bringing valuable documents on Johann Sebastian Bach and his music to Leipzig. Wollny contributed to the New Bach Edition and is part of the editorial team of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's collected works. He is a professor at the University of Leipzig and teaches internationally.

Life

Wollny studied musicology, art history and German at the University of Cologne from 1981 to 1987 . He deepened the study of musicology at Harvard University in Christoph Wolff , Lewis Lockwood and Reinhold Brinkmann and was founded in 1993 with a thesis on Wilhelm Friedemann Bach for Ph.D. PhD. He then worked as a research assistant at the Leipzig Bach Archive . From 2001 he headed Research I, was a speaker for the library and curator of the manuscript collection.

Wollny received his habilitation in 2009 at the University of Leipzig with his thesis "Studies on Style Change in Protestant Figural Music of the Middle 17th Century". In 2014 he became director of the Bach Archive. In 2017 he and his colleagues managed to get the autograph of the score of Bach's chorale cantata O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort , BWV 20 back to Leipzig. In 2019, the Bach Archive acquired the part books of the last movement from Bach's St. Matthew Passion , We sit down with tears, which originated in Berlin in the 1770s and proved that Bach's sacred music, at least in private circles, also between his death and the rediscovery of Matthew Passion was played in Berlin and Breslau. In 2021, the Bach Archive acquired Gustav Mahler's copy of the Bach edition, which consisted of 59 of 61 volumes in the edition of the Leipzig Bach Society , the first edition of Bach's works. Mahler had provided them with handwritten notes and included his arrangement of the gavotte from Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068 . The edition was privately owned and will be made available to the public and musicologists for the first time, as Wollny announced to the press. Wollny is the dramaturge of the Leipzig Bach Festival .

Wollny has also been a professor at Leipzig University since 2014. He taught regularly in Dresden and as a guest in Weimar, at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Humboldt University in Berlin. In 2020 he received an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University .

Wollny works for the Neue Bach-Ausgabe and is part of the team of editors for the collected works of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach . He has been editor of the Mitteldeutsche Barockmusik yearbook since 2002 and of the Bach yearbook since 2005 . His publications are mainly about the Bach family and the music history of the 17th and 18th centuries.
