Peter Alexander van den Berg (born December 19, 1971 in Rotterdam ), or Peter van den Berg for short , is a former Dutch football player and current coach .

Player career

Peter van den Berg began his professional career in 1989 at Excelsior Rotterdam in the Eerste Divisie , the second Dutch division. In the 1991/92 season his team qualified for the promotion playoffs. In the group stage, however, Rotterdam failed at FC Den Bosch and FC Eindhoven . 3 years later van den Berg played again with his team for promotion, this time they failed at the first division Go Ahead Eagles Deventer . After the second burst promotion, the right defender moved to league rivals SC Cambuur-Leeuwarden . In his first season he reached the playoff games for promotion with his new team. But even with Cambuur the promotion should not succeed and they only reached one point from 6 playoff games. In the following season, a similar scenario presented itself when van den Berg's team failed after a very good second place in the table in the promotion round. At SC Cambuur, the right defender was nicknamed Highlander because of his long hair and strong performances .

In the summer of 1997 Peter van den Berg moved to AZ Alkmaar, relegated to the first division . Under coach Willem van Hanegem , the team won the championship and made it into the first division for van den Berg. In the promotion games, his former club SC Cambuur had made it this season. In the Eredivisie he achieved a remarkable ninth and seventh place in the table with Alkmaar in the two following years. After the 1999/2000 season, van den Berg moved to league rivals RKC Waalwijk , who had qualified for the third round of the 2000 UEFA Intertoto Cup . There they failed, however, at the then English first division club Bradford City . Nevertheless, it was van den Berg's first competitive game on international soil. Under the successful coach Martin Jol , Waalwijk also qualified for the UEFA Intertoto Cup the following season. However, the team failed again in the first game, this time against the German representative TSV 1860 Munich . In the following two years, the right defender played with his team in midfield of the league.

In 2003 he moved to Feyenoord Rotterdam and thus back to his hometown. In the league he reached third place in the table with his team and thus the same position as in the previous season. In the 2003/04 UEFA Cup , his team failed in the second round against Czech representatives FK Teplice . Due to the firm commitments of Karim Saidi and Pascal Bosschaart , he left Rotterdam after the season and switched to Vitesse Arnhem , where he played until 2006. Then van den Berg went to the second division club FC Den Bosch . As at the beginning of his career, his team always played a good season and failed in the promotion playoffs to the first division. After the 2008/09 season he officially ended his professional career.

Coaching career

After his playing career, Peter van den Berg started working for Sparta in his hometown Rotterdam . Initially active in scouting for two years, he took over the junior team as head coach from 2011. A year later he also became an assistant coach for the professionals. Under five different head coaches, including the well-known Henk ten Cate , Rotterdam tried during this time to gain promotion to the top Dutch division, but failed again and again in the promotion playoffs. In February 2015, van den Berg took over the position of coach at the second division bottom RKC Waalwijk , but could not change the table situation. Due to the regulations in force at the time, the club did not relegate at the end of the season and continued to play in the Eerste Divisie . In the 2016/17 season he led Waalwijk into midfield of the league. In the subsequent promotion playoff, however, they failed in the first round at FC Emmen . In 2017 van den Berg got off to a bad start with his team in the league. After just four wins from 19 games, he was sacked in December.

Since July 2018 he has been training the reserves of Feyenoord Rotterdam , better known as Jong Feyenoord.
