Peter vom Stein (* around 1390; † October 31, 1480 ) was vicar general and cathedral cantor in the prince-bishopric of Speyer and canon in Worms .

Origin and family

He came from the patrician family vom Stein (also de Lapide ), who appeared at the Heidelberg court and of whom only scant information is available. The first member to appear there was Otto vom Stein, notary Ruprecht II of the Palatinate in 1396 . His son of the same name worked 1400–1402 in the chancellery of King Ruprecht and is apparently the father of Peter vom Stein and his three brothers Friedrich, Marsilius (cleric in Speyer, Stiftsdekan in Worms) and Otto (canon in Worms, † 1458).

Live and act

Peter vom Stein studied in the winter semester 1400/1401 at the University of Heidelberg . In 1406 he became a bachelor's degree there , in 1407 he obtained his master's degree and licentiate at the artist faculty , and in 1410 he still appears as a temptator (examination commissioner) at master's degree examinations. As early as February 25, 1401, King Ruprecht (also Elector of the Palatinate) presented him as a canon at St. Peter's Abbey in Basel . He is referred to as a cleric from the diocese of Worms , to which Heidelberg also belonged at the time.

He continued his studies at the University of Padua to enter the Heidelberg Faculty of Canon Law in 1416. He carried the title of Doctor juris utriusque (ecclesiastical and secular law).

On September 22nd, 1453, Peter vom Stein became rector of the Bacharach parish, whose collage also belonged to the Palatinate . His brother Otto was the owner of the parish there until 1449.

In 1458, with the support of the Count Palatine, Peter vom Stein also received the position of canon of Worms from his brother Otto, who died that year. In 1459 he became canon in Speyer. He held both positions until his death. In 1466 the cleric received a preamble at the St. Moritz Church in Speyer, in 1471 he became cathedral cantor in Speyer, and on March 4, 1472 he was elected provost of St. German .

In 1462 Peter vom Stein was Chancellor of the Archbishop of Mainz Diether von Isenburg , in 1466 the Speyer Bishop Matthias von Rammung appointed him his vicar general, which he held until 1479. Rammung was Chancellor of the Electorate of the Palatinate, at the same time a conscientious sovereign and zealous reformer of church life in his diocese. Peter von Stein became his closest collaborator with the religious reform measures. The practical implementation of the reforms sought by the bishop was in his hands and he held several diocesan synods for this purpose . The historian Franz Haffner wrote about him in 1961:

He was a man of rare ethical qualities. A pronounced sense of duty and immediate obedience and loyalty to his bishop distinguished him above all. He tirelessly took care of the worship service and encouraged clergy and people to religious life. He always tried to counter the numerous grievances. Because of his great services as a co-regenerator of the Speyer diocese, he deserves special recognition. "

.

On November 3, 1479, Peter vom Stein was appointed rector of the Herbolzheim parish near Amorbach. As an almost 90-year-old old man, in March and April 1480 he was still active in the court and council of the Speyer bishop Ludwig von Helmstatt .

He died on October 31, 1480 and on this day is entered with a memorial for the year in the younger Seelbuch of the Speyer Cathedral .
