Peter von Englisberg (* around 1470 in Freiburg im Üechtland ; † February 28, 1545 there ) was a knight of the Order of St. John and an honorary citizen of Lucerne, Bern and Basel. He was the last Commander of the Coming Münchenbuchsee and Thunstetten .

Life

Peter von Englisberg was born as the son of Dietrich von Englisberg. He joined the Order of St. John in 1489. After 1498 and 1515 to 1520 he did several years of military service in Malta and in the Levant . In 1504 he became commander of Freiburg , Hohenrain and Reiden , 1505 of Münchenbuchsee , 1508 of Basel and Rheinfelden and 1520 of Thunstetten . Under his leadership, the Kommende Freiburg was structurally restored, economically organized and spiritually revived. Within the Order of St. John (from 1530 Order of Malta) he had influence and reputation. The restoration of the Moosseedorf and Bremgarten churches was carried out under his rule . The Kommenden Münchenbuchsee and Thunstetten were secularized in the course of the Reformation (1528) and ceded to Bern.

Peter von Englisberg was inclined to the Reformation ideas and after the Bern disputation in January 1528 was considered a staunch supporter of the Reformation. In Freiburg, on the other hand, he was still the good Catholic. He had initiated the handover of the considerable property of the Johanniter Commandery without the knowledge of his superiors. For this he was amply rewarded by the Bern government. For his help, he received Bremgarten Castle as a retirement home and the new bailiff of Münchenbuchsee was also instructed to deliver him a certain amount of natural produce from the Buchsee estate every year until the end of his life. He probably spent his last years in his mother monastery and died on February 28, 1545. He found his final resting place in the Saint-Jean church in Freiburg in Üechtland.
