Peter von Roten (born June 5, 1916 in Raron , † August 30, 1991 in Basel ) was a Swiss judge , politician and women's rights activist.

biography

Peter von Roten was the fifth child of a wealthy Valais family; his mother Maria Bertha von Roten was the daughter of the Basel lawyer Ernst Feigenwinter . He completed his Matura in Brig and studied law in Freiburg , Paris and Bern . In 1948 he married Iris von Rothen , b. Meyer, a Swiss lawyer , journalist and women's rights activist . From 1941 to 1957 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Valais , which he chaired in 1948/49. He was also a deputy reporter at the Westlich Raron District Court . From 1944 to 1983 he held the post of substitute judge at the Instruction Court in Visp and Westlich Raron. As a Catholic-Conservative National Council, von Roten was involved in national politics from 1948 to 1951. Among other things, he campaigned for women's suffrage and the abolition of the army. From 1953 to 1987 he was Prefect of the Western Raron District. From 1944 to 1954 he was an editor , then until 1991 a columnist for the Walliser Bote .

Peter and Iris von Roten's relationship is shown in the film Enemies in Love . This is a mixture of feature film, archive recordings and eyewitness testimony. It is based on the biography of the same name by Wilfried Meichtry .
