Peter von der Osten-Sacken (astronomer)

Peter Baron von der Osten-Sacken (born May 29, 1909 in Mitau , † March 10, 2008 in Lübeck ) was a German astronomer and physicist .

Life

Peter von der Osten-Sacken, who comes from a German-Baltic noble family, studied astronomy , physics and mathematics at the University of Riga . In 1939 he was in the German Reich resettled and a doctorate in Berlin to Dr. phil. During the Second World War he served as an officer in the Wehrmacht , thanks to his fluent knowledge of Russian in espionage and counter-espionage , most recently in the rank of lieutenant.

After the Second World War he lived and worked in Lübeck, where, in addition to his scientific research , he also taught at the municipal high schools and also founded the Lübeck observatory on May 30, 1952 , of which he remained director until he left in February 1990. In addition, he wrote several books, his first work was called: "Wanderer durch Raum und Zeit" and appeared in 1965. His main field of activity was galaxy research .

In 1989 he was awarded the honorary professorship of the State of Schleswig-Holstein “in recognition of his services to the construction and expansion of the Lübeck observatory as well as in recognition of his scientific contributions to astronomical research at home and abroad and his decades of outstanding commitment to adult education” .

In the 1990s, Peter von der Osten-Sacken developed a 3D video system that does without the filters required in conventional processes. Under the name X3D , his system is being further developed for commercial use by the German-American group of companies X3D Technologies .

Peter von der Osten-Sacken had been married to his wife Rigmor (* 1919) since 1939 and had two children.
