Petra Wunderlich takes photos with a 5 × 7 medium format camera. She always photographs her horizontal format black and white photos early in the morning in the first light of day and from an elevated position. Her works are deserted and the section is always chosen so that no horizon can be seen in the picture.

Church buildings and quarries are central themes in Wunderlich's work. She has been photographing the quarries in Carrara since the 1980s and Solnhofen since the 1990s. Partly ancient quarries that have been out of service for a long time and have been left open. They allow a view of the rock layers that depict the history of art and architecture, as the great masters like Michelangelo got their stones from Carrara, but also architects and builders since the Roman Empire .

Stone is also the starting material for churches . For the mapping series (1994–1998) Petra Wunderlich photographed the many free churches in Brooklyn . It shows how the various ethnic groups inscribe their own religion and aesthetics into the cityscape and transform uniform concrete boxes into religious places by designing the facades with writing and religious symbols. From 1995 to 2015 Petra Wunderlich photographed a series of synagogues in New York City , which was shown for the first time under the title "Common Ground" in the Bernhard Knaus Fine Art gallery, Frankfurt.
