Petrit Dume

Petrit Dume (born May 20, 1920 in Kolonja district , † December 5, 1975 ) was an Albanian general and politician of the Party of Labor of Albania (PPSh).

Life

During the Second World War , Dume participated as a partisan from 1942 to 1944 in the communist anti-fascist war of independence and was most recently commander of the partisan battalion Hakmarrja .

After the founding of the People's Republic of Albania on January 11, 1946, he joined the armed forces ( Forcat e Armatosura të Shqipërisë ) and rose over time to the command of a brigade and then a division .

Between 1948 and 1974 he was a member of the People's Assembly ( Kuvendi Popullor ) and represented the small town of Erseka . At the same time he was a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the PPSh.

Dume, who was a graduate of the USSR General Staff Academy Marshal Kliment Yefremovich Voroshilov in Moscow , was finally appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces in 1953. Between 1957 and 1974, Major General Dume was also Vice Minister for Defense and 1st Vice Minister for Defense. In this function he was last head of a military delegation on a visit to the People's Liberation Army in December 1973 .

At the 4th party congress of the PPSh he was elected as a candidate for the Politburo of the PPSh Central Committee in February 1961 and held this function until July 1974.

Petrit Dume was one of 154 people who were given the title "Hero of the People" ( Hero i Popullit ).

In July 1974, as a confidante of Defense Minister Beqir Balluku , he was accused of inciting revisionist ideas and charged in a military court with an attempted military coup and treason .

A little later he was sentenced to death together with Balluku and the head of the political headquarters of the armed forces Hito Çako and later executed . His successor as Chief of the General Staff was initially Sami Meçollari , who was replaced by Veli Llakaj in 1975 .

After the collapse of communism, his body was exhumed on July 18, 2000 at the request of his family and buried in a secret grave in Horë-Vranisht in the district of Vlora together with Generals Balluku and Çako, who were convicted at the time with him .

The football club Partizani Tirana bears the nickname Futboll Klub Gjeneral Petrit Dume in his honor .
