Professional background

Petru Drăgan was born in Jimbolia in 1932. After graduating from the Constantin Diaconovici Loga National College and studying medicine at the Victor Babeș Medical and Pharmaceutical University in Timișoara, he came to the "Urological University Clinic" in Timișoara in 1959 , which was housed in the Begaspital , but since 1974 has been housed in the Timișoara District Hospital for Emergency Medicine . Here the training to become a specialist in urology took place. Further specializations took place in Bucharest , at the Panduri Clinic, where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1971 .

This was followed by a scholarship from the Fulbright Academy at the Medical Faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles (1969–1970) and one in Freiburg i. Br. At the Medical Faculty of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg (1977). After his return from the United States, he introduced 15 new surgical intervention techniques to the “Urological Clinic” in Timișoara and advocated the introduction of “endourology”. As part of the medical-technical assistance provided by Romania to Liberia , Petru Drăgan stayed in Monrovia from 1975 to 1976 , where he taught urology and practiced as a doctor.

Petru Dragan reached the peak of his career in the years 1980–1981 with kidney transplantation . The 1980 kidney transplant from a living donor was the first of its kind in Timișoara and the fifth in Romania. In 1981 he achieved a national premiere with the first double transplant and the first kidney transplant from a brain-dead organ donor. The two successful transplants represented a first-rate scientific achievement of the Timişoara surgical school and established Dragan's reputation.

Petru Drăgan also developed a rich scientific activity, which was reflected in about 150 published works, of which over 50 were published abroad. Added to this was his decades of teaching at the Medical Institute in Timisoara. Since 1987 he has held the chair for urology.
