The Pfaffenstein is an 1871  m above sea level. A. high peak in the Austrian Upper Styria. In Eisenerz it is considered the local mountain. Typical for a Hochschwabberg are the high mountain meadows and the sloping walls. The Pfaffenstein has three peaks: the actual main peak in the north and the significantly lower east peak can only be reached by unmarked paths. Usually the west summit (only slightly lower than the main summit) is visited. In the immediate vicinity is the summit cross visible from Eisenerz ( 1865  m ).

Climbs

  • The Markussteig leads from Eisenerz under the north walls of the west summit and then onto it. On this ascent, as on all others, you need surefootedness and a head for heights, and wearing a rockfall helmet is recommended. Due to some passages with ladders and steel cable securing the difficulty as is A to A / B stated.
  • The uppermost part of the Markussteig can also be reached from the Leopoldsteiner See via the Urlaubkreuz and the Schneerosensteig (closed in 2012 due to avalanche damage).
  • The Südwandsteig (Schrabachersteig) leads from Eisenerz to the saddle between the east and west peaks; the difficulty is given as A / B.
  • The Eisenerzer Klettersteig (level of difficulty C – D) leads over the west ridge to the west summit; it branches off from the Markussteig at about 1530 m. Via ferrata equipment for self-belaying is required. This via ferrata runs partly together with the climbing route ( difficulty III) over the west ridge.
  • The east summit can also be climbed without a path from the Gehartsbachsattel; this bypasses the eastern rock faces on the north side. Although this ascent does not exceed difficulty I, high demands are placed on surefootedness and ability to orientate yourself.
