The rectory in Volkach

The rectory (address Pfarrhof 1 , formerly house number 359) is a listed building in the old town of the Lower Franconian town of Volkach . It has been the home of the Catholic pastor of the Church of St. Bartholomew since the 17th century.

history

Already in 1404 a parsonage can be found, which was opposite the parish church St. Bartholomäus and St. Georg in a side street. In Volkach, the parish institutions were moved from the nearby Kirchberg to the city in the 15th century, thereby enhancing the value of the settlement. Several fields were assigned to the rectory that the respective pastor could cultivate. These included 14 vineyards in the vicinity of the city.

After the Thirty Years' War and the destruction caused by the many passages and billeting, parts of the rectory were rebuilt around 1678. The first pastor to move into the angular courtyard was Johann Christoph Hausher, who also held the office of dean of the Gerolzhofen regional chapter. In 1685 a completely new building was started. The builder was the Würzburg Cathedral Chapter , which also had the right of the pastor to appoint. However, parts of the house were also built by the townspeople.

In addition to the courtyard, the property housed other buildings that were important for the economic supply of the respective pastor. The house had a cellar, a press house , a wash house, a cattle shed, a feed store, a garden and a courtyard. In 1839 the house had a barn as an outbuilding and a chaplain , which was valued at 1000 guilders.

In 1900, when the honorary citizen and pastor Peter Braun lived in the property, the rectory also included stables, a feed room and a pigsty. In 1951 the Volkach Catholic Parish Foundation took over the house and has been responsible for the building work ever since . In 1992 extensive renovations were carried out on the building complex. The house is classified as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments. Underground remains of previous buildings are noted as ground monuments . The rectory is part of the Volkach Old Town ensemble .

description

House figure at the rectory

The rectory is a two-storey corner courtyard from the last quarter of the 17th century. The representative components are plastered, the half-timbered upper floor has been made visible at the rear . The property includes a large courtyard that can be entered from Zehentgasse. The house was built on the eaves in the direction of the main street and ends with a gable roof. The window frames are drilled .

Below the courtyard is a spacious vaulted cellar , which originally contained a wine press and was used to store wine. A large through gate in the street initially makes the property appear as a Häckerhof. In the course of the renovation work in the 1990s, this driveway was transformed into a portal. A figure from the 18th century with Mary, Jesus and John has been preserved above the portal .
