Pleak is a village ( Village ) in Fort Bend County in the state of Texas in the United States . At the last census in 2010 , Pleak had 1,044 inhabitants; the official estimate in 2016 put the population at 1,430.

Pleak is located in the southwest of the Greater Houston metropolitan area , around eight kilometers south of Rosenberg and 50 kilometers southwest of downtown Houston . Surrounding towns and villages are besides Rosenberg also Crabb in the northeast, Thompsons in the east, Fairchilds in the southeast, Needville in the south and Beasley in the west.

Pleak is on Texas State Highway 36 between Rosenberg and Freeport and on Farm-to-Market Road 2218 . The Big Creek , a tributary of the Brazos River, flows through the village .

history

The Pleak settlement was founded by Fred Martins and John Iselts in 1924 when they opened a grocery store there. The settlement was named after AE Pleak , a landowner who in 1912 donated part of his land in the vicinity of the present-day town for the construction of a school. In 1933, Wilbur Krenek founded an Egrenier company that was in operation until 2001.

In August 1979, Pleak was incorporated as a village, with Willie Poncik becoming the first mayor, who held the office until 1999.

2010 Census

At the 2010 United States Census, Pleak had 1,044 residents, spread across 360 households and 288 families. 70.4% of the population were white , 3.2% African American , 1.1% Native American, and 0.8% Asian ; 22.4% of the population stated a different ancestry and 2.2% had two or more ancestry. Hispanics and Latinos of all races made up 51.7% of the total population.

There were married couples living in 60.3% of households, 10.8% of households were made up of single women and 8.9% of single men. 33.6% of households had children under the age of 18 living with them and 27.5% of households had seniors over 65 years of age.

The median age in Pleak in 2010 was 42.4 years. 21.9% of the residents were younger than 18 years, 9.4% were between 18 and 24, 22.1% between 25 and 44, 32.9% between 45 and 64 and 13.7% of the residents were 65 years or older older. 51.2% of the population were male and 48.8% female.

Census 2000

At the 2000 United States Census , Pleak had 947 residents in 318 households and 269 families. 80.04% of the population were white, 4.33% African American, 0.32% Asian, 0.32% Native American, and 15.00% other or multiple races. At the time of the census, the median income for a Pleak household was $ 52,188 and that of a family was $ 56,364. The average per capita income was $ 20,773. 4.5% of the population of Pleak lived below the poverty line , including 6.0% of the underage population and none of the residents over 65 years of age.

Infrastructure

In particular, Pleak is now a commuter community for the city of Houston. There are several smaller shops, a petrol station and a bar. Pleak does not have its own post office, the residents are divided by post to Needville, Rosenberg or Richmond . Children from the northern area of ​​Pleak attend schools in the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District ; children from the southern part of the village are assigned to the Needville Independent School District .
