Ceiling painting: Martyrdom of St. Florian

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Oswald in Oberdrauburg stands below the rocky mountain slope on the northern outskirts of Oberdrauburg . The original building from 1422 was dedicated to St. Martin .

He fell victim to the major fire in the market in 1747. Including the remains of the Gothic wall, the brothers Michael and Paul Köfler erected a late baroque- classicist new building between 1805 and 1812 . Prince-Bishop Salm consecrated the church in 1819. The damage caused by the fire in 1870 on the church and tower was repaired by 1886. During restoration work in 1995/1996, the architectural polychromy with pilasters from the beginning of the 19th century was restored. A late Romanesque arched portal with side columns and simple leaf capitals was exposed.

Building description

The church consists of a three-bay nave with a recessed, square choir with a semicircular apse . The Gothic tower south of the choir with ogival sound windows is crowned by a post-classical helmet from 1886. The sacristy is built to the north of the choir . The facades are structured by plaster pilasters and painted pilaster strips . The west and south portal from 1812 each have a brick, arched porch.

A barrel vault with stitch caps rests on pilasters clad in pilasters above the nave , and in the chancel a flat dome on pilasters with composite capitals. A two-story gallery is built into the west of the nave. The organ was made by Peter Vollger in 1872. In the choir and nave there are large composite arched windows with smaller segmented arched windows in the lunettes above, separated by the main cornice . In the south wall of the choir , a straight lintel portal leads to the ground floor of the tower, and in the north wall of the choir into the sacristy. There are arched windows of the oratory above .

The vault paintings are by Christoph Brandstätter the Elder from 1809. The painting in the choir dome depicts the martyrdom of St. Florian . The evangelists are depicted in the medallions of the pendentives . In the vault of the apse you can see the Lamb of God , surrounded by angels. The wall paintings in the nave show a Pietà , the martyrdom and death of St. Oswald, a guardian angel with a view of the city of Oberdrauburg and the church fathers to the side . David is shown with a harp above the organ . The wall paintings on the north wall of the choir, Christ in Emmaus and Jesus at the Jacob's fountain, as well as the teaching Jesus above the south portal come from the workshop of Christoph Brandstätter.

Facility

The three altars and the pulpit were built after 1870 in Renaissance forms. The Swiss Melchior Paul von Deschwanden painted the altarpieces . The altarpiece of the high altar shows Our Lady with Saints Florian and Oswald. To the side are the figures of the Apostles Peter and Paul . A crucifixion group is set up above the tabernacle . The left side altar shows the painful Mother of God in the altar sheet and the teaching of Mary in the upper picture. On the right side altar, the central picture shows the crucified with St. Mary Magdalene , the top picture shows St. Joseph with the baby Jesus.

The pulpit is decorated with the figures of Jesus and the four evangelists. The Archangel Michael stands on the sound cover with the soul scales.

The Stations of the Cross painted the Vorarlberg Jakob Bertle. The church also has the console figures of Saints Florian and Oswald, a group of guardian angels and a Pietà.
