St. Martinus in Wissersheim

History and description

The church, which dates from the 12th century, had to be demolished at the end of the 19th century due to its dilapidation . It was replaced by a new building that was completed a few meters south of the old location in 1896. The new church, like the one that was broken off, is dedicated to St. Martin of Tours .

The 16 m high spire of the 25 m high tower was hit by a direct hit during World War II and had to be demolished in May 1945 due to its dilapidation. It was only set up again in 1982 when the church was completely renovated. It was made of spruce and weighs 3.5 t. The top could not be built as high as the original top because the Nörvenich air base is only about a kilometer away. Therefore height restrictions are given.

Since the merger of the former parishes of St. Medardus, St. Gertrud, St. Heribert, St. Mariä Visitation, St. Martinus and St. Viktor to form the parish of St. Josef Nörvenich , St. Martinus is no longer a parish church.

On April 9, 1985, the church was entered in the list of monuments of the municipality of Nörvenich under No. 72.
