The Pflegeersee is an artificially dammed inland lake in the Ammergau Alps in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district in the southwest of the Upper Bavarian administrative district . In the Middle Ages, it ensured the water supply to the nearby Werdenfels Castle and has been a popular excursion destination since the 1930s.

geography

The 2.14 hectare large and a few meters deep lake is located north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 845 meters above sea level in a forest area at the foot of the mountain Königsstand (1453 meters above sea level). To the east are the district of Burgrain and the community of Farchant . In the southwest the Kramerspitz dominates as the highest point.

history

Because of its proximity to Werdenfels Castle, about one kilometer to the southeast, the lake was originally called Schloßsee . On the one hand, it ensured the castle's water supply and was also used for fish farming. A wooden pipeline led the water down to the castle, which was 50 meters lower. The tubes, which were more than two meters long, were inserted into one another, the connections were reinforced by iron rings at the ends. Slope erosion and the fragile material often made the pipe in need of repair. In average 30 to 40 had the Deicheln from larch wood to be replaced. A record is the year 1544 with a total of 280 tubes replaced. By building dams, the water was dammed and the lake was artificially enlarged. As part of an extensive construction project, farmers who were required to work on the dam renewed the dam from April to December 1585, but it broke again in 1602.

Since the beginning of the 19th century, the Pflegeersee has been named after the medieval keepers who have been responsible for the administration and defense of the castle since 1294 on behalf of the Prince-Bishops of Freising . After secularization , the lake lost its importance and years later it was referred to as a "swampy water basin". In 1897 an attempt was made to intensify fish farming through renewed damming, with moderate success. A forest path laid out at the same time created a direct connection to the Garmisch district for the first time. Before that, you could only get to the lake from the Loisach Valley via the administrative building ( Schwaige Wang ) and Werdenfels Castle.

After the blacksmith Josef Neuner "Veitl" built an inn and a bathing establishment in 1927, tourism began. With the renovation of the dam in the early 1930s, the lake gained its present size. In the course of the expansion, a dugout canoe was found in 1929 , which is estimated to have sunk between 1410 and 1630 and thus allows conclusions to be drawn about the age of the lake.

Leisure and Tourism

The Pflegeersee can be reached via hiking trails or by car. In the district of Sonnenbichl, the Pflegeerseestrasse branches off in a northerly direction and leads past the Schmölzersee about two kilometers up to a parking lot. The Berggasthof Pflegeersee is located on the north bank. In addition to the culinary offer, the economy has a catering service and acts as a host for events. On the eastern bank there is a natural swimming pool with changing rooms, sanitary facilities, bathing jetties and kiosk as well as rowing boat rental.

The lake is the starting point for hikes and Nordic walking tours. This is where both the Kramerplateauweg and the Werdenfels Castle Educational Trail begin, which provide information on the history of the castle and its surroundings with the help of display boards.

Depending on the season, the lake also provides the setting for sporting activities such as fishing and curling . Horse-drawn carriage rides are also available on request.
