Science museum
The building was designed by the Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid , was to cost 67 million euros and was realized in a project partnership with the Lörrach architectural office Mayer Bährle . After a little more than four years of construction, the permanent exhibition was opened on November 24, 2005. Over 350 interactive experiment stations (around 40 of which were designed by artists) make science and technology tangible with different senses. The approximately 9,000 square meter exhibition is subdivided according to the main themes “Life, Seeing, Energy, Dynamics, Sensitivity, Maths”. Changing special exhibitions complement the topics.
According to the educational concept, according to which a playful handling of the phenomena best promotes understanding, there is no prescribed course. Simple experimental arrangements encourage visitors to understand how they work by thinking and not just trying them out. Display and text boards (German and English) explain the respective process at each station. The entrance area, the ideas forum, the science theater and a restaurant are located on the ground floor, above is the main floor, the “experimental landscape”. In 2013 phæno counted around 260,000 visitors. It is a recognized extracurricular learning location .
architecture
The massive, but very dynamically designed structure was essentially made of concrete and steel . Despite its 27,000 cubic meters of concrete, the building creates a flowing and floating impression both inside and out. The height of the building is 16 m; it extends over a length of 170 m. Ten cone-shaped concrete pillars (“cones”) with a diameter of up to seven meters support the building. The support pillars create a cavernous space for outdoor events. The cones are not massive, but rather hollow and offer various functions such as a science theater or a small restaurant. Inside the building, the perspectives change with every step through sloping walls, a bent and uncovered steel girder roof structure, italic viewing slots in massive exposed concrete walls and sloping niches. According to the architect Zaha Hadid , the all-round dynamic of the building is intended to promote intellectual openness and mobility.

Phæno Foundation
The city of Wolfsburg is the initiator of the project. The client is Neuland Wohnungsgesellschaft mbH as a pseudo-private property developer. She handed over the facility to the phæno Foundation , which is dedicated to maintaining the exhibition. The main donor is the city of Wolfsburg. The aim of the phæno Foundation is to provide the building free of charge, from the initial equipment to inventory and exhibits, and to create a forum for encounters for research, teaching and application of natural sciences and technology.
Until September 2013, managing director of the operator phaeno gGmbH was Wolfgang Guthardt , former city councilor and cultural department head of the city of Wolfsburg and initiator of phæno . In October 2013, Michel Junge took over the management. By Joe Ansel , the concept of initial interactive and thematic "Science Center" phæno comes.
Execution and criticism
A new type of self-compacting concrete, which was used for the first time in such a large building structure in Germany, was used . Problems with the dimensioning, the construction and the concrete composition required one of the largest renovations on finished concrete structures. Many square meters of load-bearing walls in supporting cone 6 had to be replaced with new concrete and new reinforcement, which in terms of construction technology meant that the phæno itself had become an “experimental landscape”.
The costs for planning, building, underground parking , connection to the city bridge (via the Mittelland Canal to Autostadt ), exhibits and other equipment increased from 67 million (2000) to 79 million (2005) to 90 million euros (2010) . Most of them are to be borne by the city of Wolfsburg. Due to the high building costs in relation to the costs of the educational elements, this recognized extracurricular learning location with its poor cost-benefit ratio for education has come under fire. Significant refinancing through events is not expected.
