The Phaeothamniophyceae are a taxon of unicellular or thread-like brown algae, which are counted among the stramenopiles .

features

The species are thread-like, capsoid, palmelloid or coccoid. The cells are surrounded by a one- or two-part cell wall. The chloroplast has a belt lamella. The outer membrane of this plastid is connected directly to the outer membrane of the nuclear envelope via the endoplasmic reticulum . The DNA of their plastids ( chloroplast DNA ) has a genophore of the ring type. The cells have eye spots. The plastid pigments are: chlorophyll a and c, fucoxanthin , heteroxanthin , diatoxanthin and diadinoxanthin .

Swarming cells have two flagella . The one pointing forward has three-part hair, the one behind not. The cells have four microtubules - kinetosome roots, but no rhizoplast .
