The smooth beetle (Phalacridae) is a family of beetles that includes 500 species worldwide .

features

They are small, round, oval, shiny, mostly black or brown beetles, whose bodies are strongly arched. They are 1.2 to 3.5 millimeters long. The antennae are eleven-parted and have a three-part antenna lobe. The large eyes are flat, the head is drawn into the pronotum up to the eyes . The tarsi are five-limbed, the third limb has two lobes or is at least outlined at the tip. The fourth link is small, the claws are toothed. At the base of the wing covers there is a smooth, beveled sliding surface, delimited by a transverse line, for the pronotum that extends over the wing covers.

Way of life

The bald beetles are flower beetles; the Olibrus species develop in the flower heads of aster flowers , the Phalacrus species mostly in those of Brand- u. Rust fungus-infested ears of sweet u. Sour grasses . Some species form several generations each year.

Systematics

In Central Europe the smooth beetles are represented by three genera ( Phalacrus , Olibrus , Stilbus ) with 24 species, in Europe there are almost 60 species and subspecies from five genera.
