Phalaenopsis bellina is a kind from the family of orchids (Orchidaceae).

description

Phalaenopsis bellina is a monopodial orchid that grows mainly epiphytic . It has about 30 cm long and 10-12 cm wide, rounded leaves that are leathery to the touch.

The zygomorphic flowers give off an intense fragrance and are 5–6 cm tall. The white bracts have greenish-white to greenish-yellow tips. Their center, the approach of the dorsal sepals and petals, the column and about half of the lateral sepals are colored red-violet to blue-violet. The flowers give off an intense fragrance. After pollination , the bracts recede and turn green ( flower metamorphosis ). 7-10 cm long, light green capsule fruits develop .

distribution

Phalaenopsis bellina is endemic to Borneo .

Taxonomy

Phalaenopsis bellina was described in 1995 by Eric Alston Christenson in Brittonia . Previously, plants of this species were known as the Borneo type of Phalaenopsis violacea . Basionym of this species is the variety Phalaenopsis violacea var. Bellina described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1884 .

Similarity to other species

Due to the similar lip of both species, Phalaenopsis bellina has long been considered the "Borneo" type of Phalaenopsis violacea . The morphology of the callus , an otherwise common feature to differentiate closely related Phalaenopsis species, does not differ either. In Phalaenopsis - A Monograph , Christenson writes of possible distinguishing features: According to this, the petals in Phalaenopsis bellina are rather egg-shaped, in Phalaenopsis violacea elliptical. While in Phalaenopsis violacea the petals are less than 0.7 cm wide, in Phalaenopsis bellina they are usually more than 1.3 cm wide. The tips of the sepals there form an isosceles triangle, while in Phalaenopsis violacea an equilateral triangle is formed. A fragrance analysis also showed that both species emit significantly different scents. With Phalaenopsis bellina the scent consists almost exclusively of geraniol (64%) and linalool (32%). In Phalaenopsis violacea these components are also included, as well, however, the proportion of dominates elemicin (55%) and cinnamyl alcohol (27%). This resulted in Phal. violacea has a rather spicy fragrance, while Phal. bellina a lemon-like scent is the result.
